Microscope Experiments

Laboratory is very essential in science learning. It enable students to test theories that they have learnt to practice. Thus, enhance the understanding of science learning. Moreover, it will keep the students’ interest in learning science. The laboratory in schools must be fully equipped to make the learning process more efficient. If the laboratory is no fully equipped, it may decrease the students’ motivation in learning science due to the problems that may arise when doing the practical activities. There are modifications that can be done to the current laboratory.

Experiment,learning and research area
 The laboratory is connected with high-speed internet connection. A high technology air-conditioning system will be use in the laboratory where the temperature change according to the climate. For example, if its raining, the air-cond will automatically adjust it’s temperature to make the labboratory more comfortable. The laboratory may be divided into two areas; the experiment area and the research area. The experiment area is used for doing practical activities and learning science theories. The sitting arrangement in the experiment area is conventional where the teacher sit in front of the class. The surface of the each bench and the floor are made up of materials where it can absorb chemicals and water. The absorbed materials will be expelled in a different pipeline from the regular pipline. Thus, if any spillage occur, the students do not have to waste time clean up the spillage. At the side of each bench, there would be a sensor water tap where the water will run out automatically when students place their hand below the water tap. The laboratory will have an extensive ventilation system where not only it will act as ventilation system, it is also act as air purifier. This will make the laboratory a more conducive learning area.

  The wall of the laboratory is made up of water proof,shock proof  and bullet proof high quality glass. This glass will change colour accordingly. For example, the colour will change to blue if the students are having a test(blue colour may have calming effect on the students) or the colour will change to white if the teacher is explaining something (the wall act as whiteboard). The wall can also act as a touch screen wall and it will aso connected with a high speed internet connection. It act as a computer. Students can discuss about the theories and their practical results. They can also discuss with other students/people from other schools in and out of the country via video chat with people outside the school. When a student a major spillage occur something on his shirt, a shower will automatically come out from the ceiling on voice command. All apparatus and chemicals are placed at the bottom part of the bench. Tablet computers are installed at each bench and it will be covered with waterproof and chemicalproof cover. Students can record their practical results to the tablet and save their work. The apparatus and chemicals needed for the practical activities can be easily obtained by typing the needed materials on the tablet computers and the required materials will be ready automatically on the bench.

The research centre will be fully equipped with high-tech gadgets:
 
  • laptops/computers – students can surf the internet, save their practical results directly in the laptop, they can do their pratical report immediately and they can upload their results and report in lms-style websitewhere they can share their results with their peer.
  • Digital camera – students can take a picture or video of their practical results. For example if there is a change in colour, then they can take the picture to show how the actual colour look like instead of just giving description on the colour change.
  • scanner/printer – students or teacher can scan or print report, picture, etc.
In this area, there will be a large round table with chairs. This is used if students want to do discussion or revision.


Security
It is important for the laboratory to have high quality extensive security system. This is due to the fact that the laboratory is fully equipped with high technology gadgets. The most important part is to have security camera in the laboratory. Every corner of the experiment are and research area is equppied with sceurity camera. The door of the laboratory must have a conventional lock and key and in additional it also need password and an eye-sensor gadget to open the door. The key and password are limited to teachers and lab assistant.

 
 
 
 
 
Laboratory preparation
Database will be used to monitor the apparatus and chemicals. Any breakage of apparatus, expiration of chemicals or if the chemicals are finish can be recorded to the database. This will help lab teachnician to keep track of these materials.

PROPOSAL FOR SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY IN THE LABORATORY 2013 by Hazrin Shah
 
 I have been a science teacher in this school for six years now. However some teachers are having difficulties teaching a particular topic due to absence or shortage of apparatus, safety issues as well as some teaching aids.
The shortages of apparatus are such as labo gas, microscope, freshly new chemicals.
 
The teachings aids are such as OHP projector, interactive whiteboard, computers and internet access.Some safety issues are such as arrangement of bench, sprinkler system and laboratory safety coat.
 
An advanced microscope is needed in the laboratory. A light microscope is not enough to see a higher resolution of a plant cell or parts of an insect. If we have an advanced microscope, students can easily compare different sample collected. With that, students will have a greater understanding on that particular topic. With better technology, we can get more accurate readings of experiments and less experimental error.
 
In terms of teaching aids, the laboratory should have an interactive whiteboard in order to stimulate the learning of science and less time consuming. This technology is useful to teach students the material presented again and again such as if a student is absent from school or doesn’t understand the lesson for the first time. At the mean time, we have to go to the computer laboratory in order to use that kind of technology. A better and faster access of internet and computers are needed in the laboratory so that students and teachers can research new things found in the internet during the lesson. It would be better for students to be provided with one computer each during the lesson. A mounted LCD projector including the screen should be have in the laboratory in order for the teacher to use interactive learning using software such as powerpoint, keynote and other educational software.
           
In terms of safety issue, we need to put on an automatic sprinkler system in the laboratory in case there is fire. As we all know that many experiments in the laboratory involve using labo gas or hazardous chemicals. Laboratory safety coats should also be accessible to each student when dealing with chemicals.
 
The whole quality of the bench should also be changed to a fire resistant one. The wooden bench should be change to a cement, tile or materials that are not easily burnt or long lasting.
